The Office of Fiscal Accountability and Compliance report on the Stanhope School District will be reviewed at the meeting on July 2, 2008 at 7pm at the Valley Road School. The review will be done in public session. a.dibenedetto
As the new school year approaches, one can sense a state of optimism in the Valley Road School building, one that is derived from both human and institutional sources. On the "human" side, the fact that our new assistant principal, Mr. Cliff Burns has started work serves as a base to the positive feelings. Mr. Burns, a gentleman who has taught in the Bronx and in Morris County has a high level of energy, is an excellent listener and makes meaningful decisions based on proper reflection. Due to cost saving measures, the position of principal was abolished by the board and the assistant principal position created. Mr. Burns is off to an outstanding start and is anxious for the school year to begin.
In addition to the assistant principal, seven new staff members have been hired. Again, in the spirit of cost savings that was promised to the town council, the district has used strategies in the hiring of staff designed to save money, yet provide proper services to our children. Thus a one full time position was adjusted to two part time teachers. Two retirement positions were filled with less expensive professional staff members. The only new costs involved in the hiring was for the Linden Avenue Pre-School programs and those who have read the recent news, those programs must start by September as part of our corrective action plan.
Mr. Paul Gonzalez is our new Spanish teacher and will be working his first full time job after being a replacement teacher. Christina Rocco, a former substitute, has been hired as a math teacher for grades four and five. Pat Pallay and Christine Ferraro have been hired as part time special education teachers. Dina Solimando is a full time pre-school teacher at Linden Avenue and Melanie Richeda will work in the same capacity but half of her time will be spent in Netcong, teaching in the K4 program there. Gwen DelValle is the new LDTC.
As superintendent, I have high expectations for these individuals and am hopeful that, when mixed with the experienced current staff members, the district students will be well served.
In terms of institutional reasons for optimism, there is a general feeling at the school that the mistakes of the past are being corrected. Mrs. Lorraine Snyder, the Business Administrator is working very hard to ensure that minutes are completed, reports are filed and money is properly managed. The board has filed a corrective action plan which hopefully satisfies the New Jersey State Department of Education that the proper path is being followed in terms of compliance. Hence it is full speed ahead on the new school year!
